Standard 1: Accesses information efficiently and effectively
- Locate areas of the library/media center: Introduce the Dewey Decimal organization of libraries.
- Utilize the library/media center to explore and experience print and electronic materials for pleasure or curricular requirements: Access non-fiction books utilizing the Dewey Decimal numbers to the "hundreds." Locate the biography section.
- Utilize the library catalog and electronic resources: Introduction of library catalog.
Standard 2: Evaluates information critically and competently
- Determine appropriateness of selected material: Evaluate completeness of material selected.
- Respond to literature: Identify the plot structure and predict outcomes.
- Analyze the information (thinks about the story/information and asks questions about what he/she doesn’t understand): Recognize that understanding the characters will aid in comprehending the story.
- Discuss the contributions of authors, illustrators, and publishers: Recognize that illustrations aid in storytelling.
Standard 3: Organizes information
- Identify the parts of a book: Identify the index, table of contents, glossary.
- Compile research information: Identify facts.
Standard 4: Uses information effectively and creatively
- Select and utilize appropriate library and research skills: Alphabetize words to the second letter. Use a table of contents to locate information.
- Assembles information: Write a report which includes more than one section, title page, table of contents, and bibliography.
