Standard 1: Accesses information efficiently and effectively
- Locate areas of the library/media center: Locate the catalog stations and online reference materials.
- Utilize the library/media center to explore and experience print and electronic materials for pleasure or curricular requirements: Recognize non-fiction books utilizing the Dewey Decimal numbers up to the decimal.
- Utilize the library catalog and electronic resources: Utilize the visual catalog to find a book by title, author, or subject. With assistance, access the internet.
Standard 2: Evaluates information critically and competently
- Identify the class or category of materials: Identify fictional genre: mystery, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, etc.
- Respond to literature: Relate literature to personal experience.
- Analyze the information (thinks about the story/information and asks questions about what he/she doesn’t understand): Interpret figurative language (i.e., metaphors). Understand how humor is used in literature.
- Discuss the contributions of authors, illustrators, and publishers: Discuss how the author uses language to convey theme, mood, message.
Standard 3: Organizes information
- Identify the parts of a book: Identify the publication, copyright, and flyleaf.
- Compile research information: Complete an outline (form) of information from research materials.
Standard 4: Uses information effectively and creatively

Standard 6: Practices ethical usage of information and information technologies
- Follow established rules of the library: Understand different circulation types.
- Use equipment properly: Understand the proper use of the computer.
